Round and Round with the Anthem /A Vueltas con el Himno

There has been a try to bring lyrics to the Spanish anthem lately. For the foreigners, I tell that Spanish anthem is one of the few which doesn’t have lyrics, and the oldest of all. Its exact origin is unknown, but it was printed for the first time in 1761 as a military march, known as March of Grenadiers. The strongest theory about its origin is that it was a present from the Prusian king to Spain when his niece and goddaughter married King Carlos III. Although there are more theories.

I like very much one wich states that the Núba al-Istihal ascribed to Ibn Bajjah (also known as Avempace) and from 11th century is suspiciously similar to the Royal March. Not that the March is too complex, hence a coincidence spaced seven centuries is not wild, but as the origin of the melody is certainly unknown, between a present from Prusian’s King, a score found in Venice’s archives and the Al-Andalus option, I like best the last one. It makes me remember a legacy I’m proud of, an age that (with its faults) there was an exemplary coexistence of different cultures in the same place, and the classical culture was saved from the fall into oblivion thanks of the scholars of an Islam that was a benchmark of talent and civilization at the time. But let’s not be deceived: there’s no trustworthy reference about this theory and is probably a hoax, as there are many out there and there were more through history.

Anyway, in 1770 the King declared it Royal March and it’s been the national anthem since then, except during two small lapses of time: the Spanish Civil War of 1820-1823 and the Second Spanish Republic. Riego’s Anthem was adopted, a song dedicated to Rafael de Riego, author of the military raising leading by himself and against the king, also claiming the previously abolished Constitution of 1812. By the Second Republic there where some other proposals, but Riego’s Anthem was adopted again as those options were said to be not adequate and also with some continuist effort, as it was the first time that Spain wasn’t under an absolutist government since the previous Civil War. After the crush over the Repblic from the dictator Franco, he recovered the Royal March, naming it National Anthem, and in the Transition to democracy no change was in the agenda, as there were more important things at play.

And although there were many officious lyrics and with different intentions, the Royal March only had an official lyric during the reign of King Alfonso XIII. So recently there has been an initiative to bring it one. The bizarre thing is the motive: it hasn’t come from the people’s will, the politics’ wish, etc. No. It’s been the Spanish Olimpic Committee. It seems there was some envy to other countries because we see their sports(wo)men standing proud, excited listening and singing their anthems. And we don’t have that.

So, together with SGAE (a.k.a. The-one-that-can't-be-named), they made a contest in search for lyrics. They chose one, and planned to gather signs to make a proposal to the Parliament and make the country adopt it officially. But the lyrics weren’t of the likings of most people, so they’ve announced that the proposal won’t go further.

Because here, where there are millions of people that want the independence of their regions, others that see the Royal March as a remnant of the absolutisms suffered over centuries and particularly Franco’s dictatorship, there isn’t so much affection to the anthem, and the lyric hardly would have liked to everyone.

Therefore, if at the beginning the proposal seemed funny for me, I was a bit scared later, because I really thought it would pass. After all, they only had to get 500,000 signs to send it to the Parliament, and once that happened I had no doubt that the two greater parties would vote for, and it would be approved. But who would have thought, it seems that people haven’t liked the lyric, and although I’m sure that they could have got the signs anyway, the Spanish Olympic Committee has been sensible enough to abandon the project, as they’ve seen that most Spanish people would spum the anthem. So I feel relieved, although if you want my opinion, I think what bothers people is that the lyrics are chosen some who-knows-you, under SGAE’s sponsorship, that scored as a goal recently with the private copy levy. And in Spain we’re land pirates and resentful bastards. The best of all is that in less than a week there was programmed a gala where tenor Plácido Domingo was gonna sing the anthem and many personalities already confirmed their attendance.

Whatever the case, tell me if it isn’t original (even if it’s only for the peculiarity of the case) to have an anthem without lyrics, and the “choon-da choon-da” isn’t the best lyric of all. To say the truth, I don’t care so much about the anthem. I think that’s the people what matter, and not certain symbols that, apart that they’ve been symbols of absolutism and subjugation, might be used in the favour of something and detriment of anything else. Although sometimes I think that I’d rather accept the anthem as mine and of all and forbid others to own it exclusively and use it in a biased way. But as my mood tends to change overnight, I also hate it sometimes and sometimes I simply don’t give a damn.

The Beginning / El Comienzo

The empty page. Bitter enemy and terrible nightmare. Blank, lined or with staves, virtual in a Word window or in the HTML text box of a blog, to dare her is usually a challenge for a creator. At least for a mediocre creator like I am, who have few inventiveness and is up to a moment of inspiration a lot of planning and revision. That’s what happens to me, or at least in part. It’s not difficult for me to continue a well planned work in progress, but to start it from scratch is as problematic for me as to give it a good conclusion.

This blog is no different. I registered several months ago, I worked on a design that pleased me and left it ready to start. During this time many things crossed my mind to write about, but the problem of how to start existed. It didn’t seem to me adequate to do it abruptly; I should find a text to be a good presentation for the blog, a text that doesn’t seem, if you go to the beginning, that someone had stolen the first pages of the book and it starts as cut. «What a silly thing», could be thought, and as a matter of fact I share that thought ninety percent of the time I consider it, because, let’s not deceive myself: no one will read this blog from the beginning, and who knows how many people will join in the future; maybe who is writing this will be the one and only. Anyway, such is my perfection effort in these matters (actually, I don’t seek for extreme perfection but I do like that things are reasonably well structured) that I wouldn’t start the blog without a decent presentation – understand “decent” that it speaks about the author, the blog itself and what it will contain without being a mere list of intentions -, although the rest of my entries could be so different as deep reflections or simply the sharing of curious things that I see through the Internet. In any case, after some time of hesitation and inactivity, to force myself to not turn apart that idea I developed the idea that, when talking about my blog and present it out there, I could link it to this entry’s page, so it had a stronger reason to be.

And by saying all this, this first entry already is a big self-refering text, without talking anything about me nor what this blog is meant to be yet. What can I do, I like to write. So, there was something about me. See you in the next entry.

It’s a joke. That’s another thing about me: I love stupid jokes. Well, as said, I like to write, and actually I already said at the beginning something about my skills for that. I have no inventiveness nor talent, which means that seldom I come with good ideas to write about – and the fact that so much time has passed before I wrote this is a proof of that – and that my word never comes naturally splendid, and rarely by work. However, when I have a story to tell I use to plan well and end happy about the result, which is not “result” until I’ve read ten times what I wrote, making precise corrections. Another problem is that since some time ago I have no time to write as I like (dedicating a whole day or afternoon to do it without pressure), and as my memory is atrocious, I can’t continue the couple of stories I have in progress because when I try I need to read again the part I already wrote and run out of time.

That’s why it seemed a good idea to me to start a blog: because whatever I’m gonna write, even if it’s as long as this presentation, it doesn’t need a planning and, in many cases, will serve to share with others the things that interested me when spending in the net one of those little spare moments I have.

So that’s basically what I’ll do here. If I see something in the Internet that I see funny, curious, interesting, etc., I’ll link it and comment it. If I see it on television or hear it in the radio, I’ll retell it to whoever’s gonna read my page (although I imagine that will be only I, myself and my father’s son). If I read a book I’ll also comment it, and if there’s something specially of my interest or happens something around me that’s worthy to be shared, I’ll reflect about it. So, for all of this, I hope that my entries will be fairly frequent and of an assorted extension and interest. I’ll follow the comments and accept constructive criticism. Destructive criticism should better be anonymous because I know many bad asses of those that break legs. I’ll also try to keep a good tag managing to classify the entries.

There may be several common subjects (or may not) due to my personal likings. Music, specially Rock and any adjacent subject, might be one of them. As a matter of fact, today, that I’m nearer to the twenties than the thirties, I carry more than four hundred live performances, thousands of travelled miles between several countries, and a very big record collection. But don’t be deceived: most of the concerts were in Spain, and most of my records are MP3, think that life is very expensive and Rock bands earn money with concerts and not with CD sales; but I’ll talk about that polemic question any other day.

I also like classic cars and bikes, specially from the United States, but not for their nationality, just because simply they’re the most beautiful for me. Anyway I don’t know so much about them, to be sincere. Motorsports also make me enjoy, and I don’t usually miss a Formula 1 race, or MotoGP and its partner categories. Of course that I’d watch Champ Car and other competitions if I could, but what can I do if in Spain there’s not so much supply and races don’t have the same interest for me if they’re not live, so I rule out the possibility of Internet downloading. My favourite drivers are Alain Prost and Jean Alesi in Formula 1 and Kevin Schwantz in motorcycle racing.

Continuing the line, I like simulators and I have a racing one in my PC, with its corresponding simulation hardware very basic in number of elements but of a good quality. I also like videogames (take note that a SimRacer will never see a racing simulator as a videogame), specially strategy and racing, and my all-time favourites are StarCraft and Alien Versus Predator 2. Oddly, the two are about aliens.

I guess it’s not strange, as after all I’ve always been said that I’m a bit weird and I’m sure some people wouldn’t find strange that I wasn’t from this planet, but I am. IF it’s not clear yet, I’m from Spain, specifically from Seville. And I hope no one has just said “ole”: you don’t know the anger it produces when someone say that when you say where are you from. Furthermore, I don’t like flamenco, I’m not religious and I loathe Seville’s Holy Week, so I’m not a good Sevillian to bump into. Before going out to see images I’d rather stay home reading books or watching cinema or TV series, as I like good stories, specifically those with intrigue and, if they have any fantastic or sci-fi element or simply anything that escapes from known history of science, they must be enough coherent: what Ronald Rolkien called “inner consistency of reality”. In other words, not to make so much sacrifices to Neptune so that the story might be assimilable.

And talking about stories, and as I mentioned Tolkien, I love languages and History, and from time to time I spend a while at Wikipedia reading everything that crosses my mind, navigating from article to article trough the links that relate them. Generally speaking, I love Wikipedia. I can begin reading an article about quasars and culminate with the politics of Benjamin Franklin after a while.

Definitely, all those are subjects of my interest and, among others, may have their place here. Or I might not publish nothing about them at all and dedicate myself to political analysis, who knows. No, I bet not. Surely, at some point, there will be an entry about a political subject, but I wish it’s very far in the future; I don’t want you to see very soon what I’m up to. It would be an amazing achievement if more than three people read this blog, so I don’t want to lose two thirds of my audience by saying something that bothers them. Because we’re all very respectful paying lip service but later we got hot-blooded when someone touches our sensitivities.

Well, this must end right now or I’ll lose the audience by pure boredom, or better say that I won’t earn it. I promise to try to be more enjoyable in the future, and if not, deal with it, that at this point of my existence it will be difficult that I can change. Just add that I’ll try to make this a bilingual blog, as I’m able to defend myself in Shakespeare’s language up to a certain point, but as the header reads, it will depend on my mood if I always use both languages or not. Don’t think that because I’m Spanish I’ll write everything in Spanish and less things in English. I already said I’m a bit weird. But you must know: as Hispanic people will get links to webs in English, you’ll have to live with some or many pages written in Cervantes’ Language.

See you in the next read. I hope that to be soon and many. If it’s that, my present for you is the maxims wich I try to see life with:

  1. I don’t know all the answers. As a matter of fact, I don’t know even a minimal part of them. There’s always a chance of being wrong, so even when I’m very sure that I’m right, the maximum would still be 99,99% . And of course, I can’t know what’s in other people’s minds, because I don’t even know everything that’s inside mine.
  2. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day (if it’s not a 24h digital clock). As it’s impossible to be 100% sure, there are never 0% of chances to be right.
  3. Everything is relative. It depends of the prism to look through and the person looking. There’s always an absolute truth for everything, but Point 1 implies that no one knows them. The best case and as in Point 2 is, you can be right by chance, but even with the best intention you put to reach that truth, you can’t be sure.

And if not, a different present:

No, no caerá esa breva.
