Hellish Rock!

This Sunday I had the chance to see, for umpteenth time, favourite musical band for almost twenty years: Helloween. I’m going to all their tours since ten years ago, sometimes more than once. It’s clear that it doesn’t touch me as hard as the first times, but there’s always a detail in every concert that makes those embarrassing liquid eye secretions remind me I’m still a human being.

What made this concert a special one is that Helloween planned their tour with Gamma Ray, so it was almost sure to see Kai Hansen from Gamma Ray playing old Helloween songs on stage with the rest of the band. That’s probably the most resembling thing to a reunion of the “classic” Helloween that there will ever be, as every living founder member of the band are on stage together. And as a bonus, another German Power Metal band that I like very much, Axxis, accompanies them on the majority of the tour.

I won’t go on very much, as I don’t want to make a chronicle, just comment the concert generally, as I use to do (or used to do, because I haven’t done it for years and must catch up) with my concert diary.

I arrived just in time to see Axxis starting, as I knew it could happen (or even worse, be late) as I had to wait for my family to exit home, as it happens that seeing Helloween two hours and a half from home seems to be a better motivation for a family outing that a dinner in a restaurant any day. It was a short show, as planned, but powerful. The low: the singer wasn’t very inspired in that occasion.

Then Gamma Ray came out on time. It was really a powerful concert with few resting moments. The sound was very good and most of the songs were fast and strong and with catchy melodies, typical of them.

I ended so tired that if it isn’t for the energetic bars and the small bottle of water I smuggled and had to ration I could have fainted. It was so crowded and tight that going out for water wasn’t an option if I wanted to go back to a good position.

And mine was only three meters away from Kai Hansen’s microphone. A positive note: I didn’t heard any Alvin and the Chipmucks moment; that’s because he can’t often reach the highest-pitched tones and the sound engineer uses to help him with some effect, and I’ve experience in the past how sometimes he overpasses the desired level.

The last to play were Helloween. They started with Halloween and a very lit stage, so I could shoot a lot of photos during the twelve minutes of the song.

They played songs of almost every record, some of them in a medley that monopolized the first encore, and the first emotional moment for me was when I heard March Of Time live for the first time. Every tour they perform one or two songs that I thought I lost the chance to hear live, and that was this year’s one (although the most memorable for me was about four years ago when they started with Starlight, Murderer and other songs from their beginnings). The other emotional moment was the end, when for a second encore Kai Hansen and every Gamma Ray member went on stage with Helloween and both bands played together the classics Future World and I Want Out, moment when some disguised roadies also went up to stage and threw some inflatable pumpkins to the crowd.

I admit that as Helloween is my all-time favourite band I can’t be very objective, and I’ve already said that I don’t wanted to write a chronicle anyway, but the only low point for me was that they couldn’t bring all their stage design inside the hall because it was smaller than other sites they’re playing, and most of it stayed well kept in their trailer at the parking.

Happy Happy Helloween!!!!

Luego salieron puntuales Gamma Ray.

¡¡¡Happy Happy Helloween!!!!
